From the sands of time, through creation, evolution, and generations, change has been a constant and that is what has been the key to Adekunle Golds’ dramatic but outstanding growth which led to the birth of his 3rd studio album, “Afropop, Vol 1”.
Ever since “Gold” his first Debut album, Adekunle Gold has been making bold statements with his art, being divergent from the norm, and running solo on his terms. Yet, “Afropop Vol 1” still stands out and makes yet again a different statement for the artiste. On this project, Adekunle Gold dares and challenges himself by making a shift from his comfort zone.
According to Apple Music, AG captions the album as his “Freedom” as an artiste. He said, “Afro Pop, Vol. 1 is my freedom. I wanted to make sounds that have come out in Africa but in my own voice”.
Making a shift like this, especially in music is quite risky as AG confirmed himself and said in an interview that “This is the one time I took all the risk in the world”. Thankfully, the shift was for the better as the album unlocks Adekunle Golds’ true potential through the tracks.
On this 10 track project. Adekunle Gold unveils the Alter Ego AG Baby in its true form as it distinctively sounds the persona all through the album.
Through each track, you could feel his talent and how he pushed through all his limits to birth such beautiful music. The music quality was top-notch as the lyrics, hooks, bridges, and choruses, prominently showed excellence. Also, Adekunle Gold was bold enough to try other genres rather than the norm such as Reggae, Dancehall, R&B, Afrobeats, and many more which showed his portent versatility as an artiste.
AG baby also shows that his sounds, while sounding familiar, are still mysterious and enigmatic as he takes listeners on a journey while focused and attentive to the music, but still wondering where the music as journeyed their soul to. The experience is truly something different.
Furthermore, Adekunle Gold tagged artistes such as Tekno, Patoranking, Nailah Blackman, and Olayinka Ehi to also showcase their talents on the album which added more flavor to the project. Also, Adekunle Gold was resilient with the production of the project and deserves some kudos as the production quality was ultra-clear and solid thanks to producers such as Pheelz, TMXO, Blaise, E Kelly, Spax and many more who worked on the album.
After listening to the album, two things became clear to me. The first thing is that
as an artiste, don’t ever get too comfortable. Be willing to grow, explore, learn, unlearn, and expand your horizon just like Adekunle Gold did. The second thing is that with this project “Afropop, Vol.1”, Adekunle Gold is unrivaled in the industry. He makes evergreen songs which will stand the sands of time, evolution, generations to come and till the end of time itself. This is “Afropop, Vol 1.”
